Celtiberia

Description

A rural region dominated by small farmlands, Celtiberia gives the impression that it is sparsely inhabited as most of its settlements are widely scattered throughout the region yet the land is rich and supports a substantial population. These settlements called castros consist of groupings of round huts clustered around a communal square with each village being home to a few families tending the surrounding fields. Wheat, flax, vegetables, grapes, olives, fruit and wild honey are grown in abundance with seafood and salt produced from the fishing villages. Industry is confined to the larger towns where mead, wine and cider are produced and flax is processed for its oil and fiber.   The capitol and largest city is Numantia.

The people of Celtiberia wear plain white tunics with colourful lace, red leather sandals and brightly coloured conical wool hats.  They favor intricately worked bracelets, Torcs and wrist cuffs as elaborate as their wealth will allow. A clannish people they are wary of outsiders although the expectation of hospitality is strong and even strangers will be offered food and cider often with polite directions to see the stranger on their way along the sometimes confusing patchwork of roads. Those that can be counted as kin, no matter how distant, are sure to receive a warm welcome for the Celtiberians take their intricate and extended family relations very seriously. The general inclination of the peasants is fiercely traditional and conservative. They cling resolutely to customs which have seen little change for centuries and live their lives as their ancestors did, bound to the harvest and following established agricultural practices. Occasionally young adults will make their way to one of the cities or join the army but it is said that a Celtiberian in never happy unless he is working the land.
