Region Details

Description

Porl is a semi-fertile rural region plagued by poor natural water sources, and the ravages of many invasions. Once a part of the Netherworld, Porl borders the cursed city of Fianik, and its people have not forgotten the depravity of the Netherworld Duke and the atrocities he committed. Parents use the Duke of the Brass City in stories to scare their children into compliance, and they needn't use their imaginations.

The people of Porl live in fortified hilltop communities, and beyond local watchmen, none dare venture outdoors come nightfall. Undead and fell beasts are common in the region, and the many barrows from battles past, provide ample resources for the living dead to grow their numbers. The people are grim, and dour, and the sky is frequently overcast. The ill weather is a crucial lifeline for the people of Porl. Rain water is collected and provides a hearty supplement to the region's poor groundwater.

The volcanic soil, remnants of Jobo's Mouth which fell into the Blight, makes the region ideal for growing grapes, and the region's wines are highly sought after. Space and water are at a premium, so every inch of irrigated soil is out to use. The environment has also yielded a deadly predator. Along the border of the Woods of Carceri and the blasted plains, where most of the locals dwell, is the hunting growns of the Rækketander, a horrifying carnivore. The Rækketander are a breed of large, oxen sized, furless hunting cats. Their fangs are often compared to sabers, and their hides are thick and leathery. They hunt in packs and are notoriously difficult to tame, and have made raising animals in Porl next to impossible.

The coastline is avoided due to equal parts superstition and terrain. The coast is a bleak, grey, ashy swamp largely devoid of life. This restricts the locals ability to trade to their neighbors, since access to the Heenic Sea is so hard. The swamp is home to several species of mushrooms, which few harvest.
