Region Details

Description

Situated far to the north of Beluaterra yet not far enough for ice shelves to form, the predominantly coastal Rafferty is a cold, barren rural region. The tundra climate means that it is cold all year round, and the proximity to the open ocean brings bone-numbing winds in to sweep the plains.

Rafferty's shoreline is a contradiction; dark rocky beaches characterise much of the coast northwards of Kannoktet until there is a sudden climb and jagged, knife-edged cliffs that make little sense where Rafferty meets the region of Crim. Most of the older folk know this spot to be where a city once stood... Until it was swallowed into the Netherworld in the Fifth Invasion of Beluaterra.

The region is sparsely populated for its size with most of the smallfolk scraping a living off the land through primitive agriculture and fishing. Small settlements are the rule, as it is difficult to find enough resources for a larger town, much less a defensible one.

The largest permanent settlement goes by the name of Chilblains Hold, the administrative seat of Rafferty. The Hold is a hill fort of stout timber and rock situated high on Rafferty's only peninsula. Its amenities are a world's apart from the primitive resources available to the smallfolk, about as advanced as one can expect so far north. The only mead hall in all Rafferty stands sheltered within the walls of the Hold.
