Description

After the events of the Great Darkness that gave rise to the Kalmar Delta, Bescanon was no longer a hub of trade between the Bescan River and the sea.  Trade is still profitable along the rivers along both sides of the Delta, of course, and the Bridge to Troyes is still the best way to travel north or south west of the Akesh Mountains; but Bescanon is no longer quite as rich as it once was.

It's strategic importance, with its walls and control of the Bridge, is undimmed however, and the bounty of the river is still quite rich.  Food is ever plentiful, and the many water-wheels make use of the strength of the river to fuel many crafts, leading to the guilds of the town having a great deal more wealth than many.  The garrison of the Bridge Towers is ever-watchful when held by those in the south, and the garrison of the Outer Walls is ever-vigilant when held by those of the north, leading to a mostly-amiable longstanding rivalry between the two quarters of the town.

There are ample farmlands contained within the Outer Walls, made exceptionally fertile both by the river itself, and the vast quantities of fish guts left over from the river catch, which are often gathered and ceremonially planted each fortnight (with vociferous arguments about which day, and which time of day, is best for the act) to renew the soil.

With the wealth and populace to rival many cities, the natural beauty and bounty of the river, and a strategic position and fortifications to ensure they are never ignored, the people of Bescanon often boast that there is no better place to live in the continent.  Their occasional rivalry with the far larger and wealthier Perdan City often leads to the townsfolk purposefully distinguishing themselves from "cityfolk", contrasting their relatively expansive homes and better food with the supposed rat-warrens and scraps consumed by their more urban kin.
