Alvaret

Description

As with much of the the northeastern "Kalmar" island of the Obsidian Islands, Alvaret is a harsh, desolate place. Almost all of Alvaret's farmland is found in the south and southwest along the Alvaret/Kalmar border where the land is still fertile to some extent.

Rising slightly in elevation as the land moves northward, sharp cliffs of igneous rock greet the great northern sea. Making up the entire northern edge of Alvaret the cliffs gently drop in elevation in the east near Stora and to the west as the coast turns southwards towards what the locals call the "Cove of Plenty". Within the area around this "Cove of Plenty" many small villages have managed to flourish, sustaining themselves on fish caught in the cove while relying on some transfer of grain from the fields along the Kalmar border.

While the bulk of Alvaret's cultivated population is found along the Kalmar border and near the "Cove of Plenty", roughly 1/4th of Alvaret's people live within the region's interior, refereed to by Alvaret's people as the "Burning Waste". A harsh, arid landscape consisting of short grasses and shrubs tolerant of the harsh environment, the "Burning Waste" makes up the majority of Alvaret. For the people that consider this harsh place home, a nomadic lifestyle has become the standard form of life. Tracking Lava Badgers, Obsidian Bison, among other wild beasts that roam the "Burning Waste", the nomadic tribes here sustain themselves through hunting, eating the meat and trading the parts that cannot be eaten. Among the majority of Alvaret's population Lava Badger pelts and Obsidian Bison horns are considered particular valuable with Lava Badger Pelts being used in clothes while Obsidian Bison horns are used to make musical instruments, and weapons.
